During the last week of June, NJR facilitated 2 exercises for a major oil company in Northern California under the new 2023 California exercise regulations. The incidents involved a very large gasoline release, and another of diesel and firefighting foam combined. Both responses had excellent support from the local fire departments and from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
The fire departments were fully integrated into the Incident Management Teams. This proved critical to addressing issues related to the gasoline release and vapors that necessitated developing a different approach to the response compared to many other products handled by the facility.
The Stockton Fire Department commented on the quality of the scripted vapor models generated by NJR’s modelling expert and how they were exactly what he would have had to work from in an actual incident. It added an extra dimension of realism to the response.
